Annual State Conference Award Nomination FAQs

2017 Award of Excellence Recipient:
Ignite Afterschool

Ignite Afterschool is a premier example of statewide collaborations. This powerful network brings together agencies and individuals in what is still considered an emerging field, and harnesses their insights, expertise, relationships, and impact to elevate the importance of ensuring that each and every young person has the opportunity to participate in engaging and high-quality opportunities.

Working across multiple sectors, including governmental, higher education, philanthropic, and business and non-profit, Ignite Afterschool has impacted the field immensely in its relatively short existence.

Ignite Afterschool is responsible for Believe It! Build It!, Minnesota's quality framework for continuous improvement in afterschool programs. It developed this framework by way of an extensive, stakeholder-at-the-center process, and bringing to bear research across other states and regions, and involving grass-roots providers and youth in fleshing out the details. This year it launched an addendum to Believe It! Build It! - a STEM Guide framework for integrating STEM into afterschool programming.

In addition, Ignite is increasing public awareness through coordinating Lights On Afterschool, moving forward legislation to increase afterschool and summer programming funds, and leading youth-voice campaigns about the importance of diverse and engaging opportunities for all youth.

Ignite's latest ventures are to extend its M3 (Making Meaning with Multiple Data Sets) training across the state, providing additional tools for programs to use in their continuous improvement process, and helping to build a blueprint for Minnesota professional development system(s) that resonates and advances both skills and competencies of Minnesota providers of programming and other opportunities for youth.

MnSACA is a very involved partner in the Ignite Afterschool network, and works closely with them to advance the needs of the field, aiming at providing quality opportunities for all youth. Our state is noted for its effective collaboration between our National AfterSchool Association (NAA) affiliate, MnSACA, and our Mott-funded statewide intermediary, Ignite.

2017 Distinguished Member Award Recipient:
Delroy Tuorila, St. Paul Public Schools

Delroy served on the MnAEYC-MnSACA Board of Directors, completing his term in 2016, and having served as Co-President for two years. He has also served on numerous committees within MnAEYC and MnSACA. Delroy was and is very committed to MnSACA and its growth. His dedication to the afterschool field is proven by his studies, current and past work as a site manager, and his service on the Board of MnAEYC-MnSACA. He is a dedicated advocate for children and those who teach and care for them.

As a board member, Delroy went above and beyond the call of duty during the transition between MnAEYC-MnSACA executive directors. He spent many late nights and weekend hours working diligently to make sure procedures were followed and all questions were answered.

Delroy is currently the site director at Hamline Discovery Club in St. Paul, and was previously a manager at Wayzata Home Base.
