What is accreditation?

Accreditation is a third-party endorsement of a program’s ability to meet research-based quality standards. Accredited programs have completed a rigorous quality improvement process and have been assessed by a representative from the accrediting body to assure that they meet standards associated with the provision of high-quality care and education.

What are the benefits to becoming accredited?

The process of becoming accredited has a number of benefits for children, families, teachers, and programs. Decades of research support the belief that children in high-quality programs benefit from improved outcomes, such as school readiness and school success, improved language development, enhanced social and emotional development, and better scores on assessments of cognitive functioning.

In Minnesota, accredited programs can also receive a higher rate of reimbursement for children receiving child care assistance. This 'tiered reimbursement' helps early care and education and school-age care programs offset the costs of operating a program working to sustain high standards of quality.

In addition, an accelerated pathway to a four-star rating in Parent Aware is available statewide for accredited child care, Head Start and school-based pre-K programs.

If you are interested in becoming accredited, or are currently pursuing accreditation and would like some additional information, contact the AFP hotline at 651-646-8689, Ext. 36 or toll free at 800-711-5690. Or, you can send an e-mail to accreditationfacilitation@mnaeyc-mnsaca.org.
